Why is a dog being a Champion important if you are looking for a pet or companion dog? In a nut shell, dogs that become Champions compete in the confirmation ring. In the confirmation ring, dogs (male and female) are judge against the standard (in our case the perfect Greater Swiss Mountain Dog). The dog determined closest to the standard wins. It is not a beauty contest. In Swissies markings are purely secondary, the underlying structure, temperament, movement etc. of the dog is what is being judged primarily. A Swissy that is put together well should have fewer muscle skeletal issues in it's lifetime thus attributing to a longer, healthier life. Of course the care and feeding of a well put together dog is also pinnacle to it's health and longevity.
The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, is one of four mountain dogs that come out of the same region, which also includes the Bernese Mountain Dog, sometimes incorrectly spelled Burmese Mountain Dog. The Swissie also known as a Swissy, GSMD, Swiss Mountain Dog or just Mountain Dog is a large breed dog and member of the Working Group. Swissies originally were used as the "ultimate farm dog". They are large enough to pull a great amount of weight or a farmer's cart. They are also athletic enough to herd the livestock and protect the flock, farm and family. Michigan Swissies are gaining in popularity for these reasons. They are used for many purposes today, but mostly as an excellent companion to the family. Swissies love their people and prefers to be with them, always. They also compete in the agility ring, weight pulling, herding, tracking, back packing and obedience venues. A Greater Swiss Mountain Dog has a strong instinct to guard and protect. Always make informed decisions concerning the adoption of a dog. All breeds have their special qualities and health concerns. Sadly for the Bernese Mountain Dog a major health concern is cancer. For a Swissy it might be bloat, a disease that effects many deep chested dogs. It is said that a Swissie is not a "cookie cutter" breed, which means; that all Swissies are not alike. So where you get your dog is very important. As a breeder it is our goal to produce, in every litter, that "ultimate family dog" that you read about. Which is why all of our dogs live with us, in our home, as family members. As a breeder you can't produce what you don't own.
