With Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, there are plenty of good reasons to do good research not just into the breed but also into the breeder. Swissies are not a cookie cutter breed. GSMD Breeders are focusing on different traits as they plan their next litter. "Good Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Breeders" want a well rounded dog able to do the things that the breed originally was used for; working on and watching over the farm (GSMD was considered the poor man's horse). Within the realm of a well rounded Swissie (Swissy) there is some latitude. For example we continue to focus on the traits of a softer (gentle temperament) Swissie. So when people say the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is the "ultimate family dog" they will think of Wildest Dream Swissies here in Michigan. Swissies are natural watch dogs and require a certain level of expertise that watch dogs require (they are not a Lab. Labs are hunting dogs, not watch dogs and thus are very different. They are also not Burmese Mountain Dogs with short hair, marking are about the only similarities). In our opinion watchfulness does not need to be developed any further in the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. That is why when looking for a Stud dog, we avoid males who have a "overly developed protective instinct" and gravitate towards dogs that are therapy dogs. Therapy dog training requires that a dog be confident in many situations. Tina describes Justus as "bomb proof" meaning if a bomb went off he could handle it in a very predictable fashion. We have friends who are breeders who in addition to a well rounded Swissy they are focusing on the Swissies athleticism and the development of his agility skills.
Poor breeders do not care about the traits the Swissy posses and they also do not care about the health of the dogs they re breeding.
